BIPOC Beginner Ski Tour at the Fest (Saturday 2/10)
Description
Join us for a day at Cranmore with Inclusive Ski Touring on Saturday, February 10, 2024, for an intro to an uphill course at Cranmore Mountain in North Conway. Enjoy a small group setting and learn the basics of taking yourself up and down the mountain on your skis or boards. The day will be centered around the identities and experiences of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. This intentional focus aims to create a space where the unique perspectives and narratives of BIPOC participants are not only acknowledged but celebrated. Some downhill experience is ideal, but we will provide coaching support for first-time skiers/riders who are up for the challenge of skiing down the mountain's easiest run.
EXPERIENCE LEVEL
All ability levels are welcome; this event is open to new skiers and riders.
WHAT TO BRING
Uphill Touring Equipment: Please bring touring skis or splitboard (a snowboard that splits in half for uphill travel), boots, poles, and skins. You can rent gear right in town - check out our festival rental partners here.
Gear List: Check out IST’s checklist for layering, including base layers, mid-layers, jackets, ski pants, socks, and gloves.
Water/Snacks to stay fueled! You can also purchase lunch at the mountain.
COURSE HIGHLIGHTS
Orientation and Gear Check: Your day begins with an orientation and gear check. We will do introductions (name, pronouns, what brought you here, where you are from/where you ski, any skiing/riding experience) and go over the objectives for the day. Learn the ins and outs of uphill skiing and snowboarding equipment, including the secure application of skins.
Uphill Skills Development: Proper skinning techniques, transitions, assessing terrain for ice, low snow coverage, etc.
Downhill Skills Development: Descending a beginner trail, volunteers can offer guidance on basic turns, body positioning, and speed control.
Minimum of 5 required to run this course
